NESD focused on Carrot River, Melfort, Nipawin for funding application

Feb 12, 2019 | 5:14 PM

The North East School Division (NESD) Board of Education adjusted its top three major capital projects ahead of the 2020-21 application deadline.

Each school division submits a list of its top three major capital projects every year, and the provincial government develops a list of the top 10 major capital projects, so school divisions know how close to approval they are.

NESD’s top three include:

Carrot River – a new expansion onto the high school gym to integrate two or three new schools

Melfort – joint use addition to Melfort Unit Comprehensive Collegiate, new expansion onto the Collegiate to integrate two to five new schools

Nipawin – LP Miller Comprehensive School renovations

Don Rempel, director of education for the NESD, said the board’s top priorities are all being combined so they can have as many options on the list as possible.

“That would include consolidations of schools as well as new school construction or additions,” Rempel said. “Carrot River (High School) could include Arborfield in the future as well as Carrot River Elementary. Melfort High School could be refurbished in addition to include two elementary schools in Melfort, as well as the outlying schools in the future.

“Our new Carrot River new school has been in the top five, up to number two or three in the last couple years. When budget time approaches, we anticipate if there are new capital projects being approved that perhaps Carrot River might be one of them.”

The capital budget would come from the Ministry of Education, although Rempel mentioned all capital projects must be approved by the ministry, even when the NESD uses its own accumulated surplus.

The NESD established new schools in Hudson Bay in 2014 and Porcupine Plain in 2011 from the capital budget.
