Melfort cannabis store done renovations, waiting for license

Feb 15, 2019 | 10:00 AM

If the future cannabis store in Melfort appears to be slacking with construction as of late, that’s because it’s been complete for some time.

Melfort’s cannabis store, located on 103 Burrows Ave. W. in the former Dataport Computer Centre, finished construction in late November.

Jean Paul Lim, the store license winner, mentioned he had been waiting for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority to conduct their final inspection and give them his permit.

David Morris, a communications representative from the SLGA, told northeastNOW permit applications are considered private information and details about specific cases.

“In general, I can tell you that the process to get a cannabis retail store permit includes a number of steps,” Morris said. “Including the completion of formal application paperwork, submitting and passing a good character check, approval of an inventory management system, a security review of the facility, etc.

“SLGA continues to work with these businesses to ensure all of the requirements necessary for obtaining a cannabis retail permit are achieved.”

People walking by the empty, locked building may have noticed that there’s no signs of construction equipment in the future Melfort cannabis store. (Aaron Schulze/northeastNOW Staff).

Lim believes the SLGA is doing what they need to do in order to get him his license and store opened.

Once he receives his cannabis retail permit, Lim said it would take a week or two to hire enough staff to run the store.
