Make it nine wins in a row for the Melfort Mustangs in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The Mustangs defeated the Kinderlsey Klippers on Saturday 6-3 and it was also a big night for the team and league’s leading scorer Justin Ball.

The Klippers opened the scoring in the first period, just seven and a half minutes in, on the powerplay. Will Van der Sloot grabbed his 12th of the year. That was followed by a shorthanded goal from Colton Schell for the Mustangs to tie things up. Just 36 seconds after, Kinderlsey restored their lead making it 2-1 after the first period of play. Mustang forward Zack Smith said they needed to get back to basics.

“We [had] to get back on our game, get pucks deep, shots on net, the usual,” Smith said. “Just got to keep going.”

And get going they did. Melfort’s Justin Ball scored 52 seconds into the second period. Then Carson Albrecht added a goal about six minutes in and the floodgates opened. Colin Schmidt, Jake Hobson, and Smith all scored within about two and a half minutes of each other to balloon the lead to 6-2. Kindersley brought it to 6-3 in the period, but that is as close as things would get.

With his assist on Jake Hobson’s goal in the second period, Justin Ball notched his 100th point. That makes him the first Mustang to hit that mark since Garret Cameron in 2002/2003.

The win moves Melfort to 35-15-4-0 on the year, still two points back of division leading Nipawin because of their win. Smith said it was a massive game for Melfort.

“Huge, huge win today,” Smith told northeastNOW. “Because we want first place, and if we want first place we have to win every game from here on out, so just got to keep it going.”

Next game action for the Mustangs will be Tuesday, Feb. 26 when the Mustangs visit the Notre Dame Hounds.
