‘Baby Bookworms’ aims to get babies’ vocabulary started

One of Melfort Public Library’s traditional events is back for another year.

Baby Bookworms is a 30 minute program, which lasts for six weeks on Mondays during the spring and autumn months.

The goal for Baby Bookworms is to encourage parents or caregivers to bring out their six to 12-month-old babies and interact with other infants by reading, rhyming, singing, and playing games in a group.

Vanessa Pederson, organizer of Baby Bookworms at Melfort Public Library, told northeastNOW that getting babies out of the house is crucial for building their communication skills at an early age.

“Just getting them out doing your regular everyday activities, interacting, and getting vocabulary started is our aim,” Pederson said. “Reading every day, singing songs, all that kind of stuff ties into this program.”

Pederson mentioned that children older than six to 12 months are also welcome to tag along for Baby Bookworms.

Baby Bookworms’ spring season begins Monday, March 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the Melfort Public Library.
