Higher Ground Music Festival bringing Saskatchewan bands to Struthers Lake

Mar 5, 2019 | 2:00 PM

A bigger and better Higher Ground Music Festival at Struthers Lake is set for the end of June.

Fay Filpula and her husband began the festival on their land near the lake last summer with six bands performing. This year’s festival is scheduled for the last weekend of June and will feature 10 bands.

“There will be more music this year, the bands start on Friday night and then Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. until midnight,” Filpula said. “There will be music probably even after that.”

Filpula said that they would be able to definitely host around 500 people, which is the goal for this summers festival.

The inspiration for the festival that the Filpula’s are referring to as “Woodstock 50 years later” came from a show that Fay attended in Saskatoon by the band ‘Dirty and the Perks.’

“We grew up going to all kinds of outdoor music festivals back in the 70’s and early 80’s and have been away from that for a few years,” Filpula said. “Since we bought our land here, I just love it here, it’s up on a hill and you can see for miles.”

The couple made the first festival possible with planning and help from friends. Since Dirty and the Perks were the inspiration behind the event, the band opened the festival last year and will perform again this year.

The land where the festival is held is also home to an organic market garden, making the weekend closest to Canada Day the best weekend for the couple to host the event.

“It will always be the kick-off to summer weekend,” Filpula said.

Bands for this year will include Troy Hudson and Broken Horse, Riff Raff, No Fixed Address, Dirty and the Perks, Cadillac Black, Flashback, Cold Shott, Carly Kat, Clara Lessa Band, and Breezin’.

On top of the musical acts, there will also be local artists and artisans on site of the festival as well as some organized kids activities in the afternoons.

Tickets are available online and will also be on hand at the Kinistino Swen Cafe. Camping is included in the ticket price.
