Melfort Minor Football registration begins

As the snow begins to melt, young athletes in the Melfort area will get ready to hit the gridiron.

Melfort Minor Football is hosting registration for its 2019 season at Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate’s library on two nights: Monday, March 11 and Tuesday, March 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

David Rogers, head coach of Melfort Minor Football, told northeastNOW the league is fun based, with its goal to develop boys and girls by focusing on skills and having everyone play.

“At this age, between Grades 5 and 8, both genders can play together,” Rogers said. “The physical differences aren’t substantial, so we have mixed teams of boys and girls. Traditionally, we have just over 60 kids which work really well for our four house teams. We have 15 kids per team and that means no kid sits off for more than one series of play.”

The Melfort Minor Football season goes from first week of May until the end of June, with the first two weeks spent on practice to see where each player is at in their development, and then Rogers and the rest of the coaches will create what they feel will be four relatively even teams to compete against one another for the next six weeks.

Rogers said any kids in the northeast area, who are ages 10 to 14, enrolled in school, and willing to travel to Melfort for game and practices are welcome to register. However, if players are already enrolled in high school football, they aren’t eligible to sign up for the Melfort Minor Football league.

Melfort Minor Football said it provides football equipment such as helmets and shoulder pads, although parents and kids will be responsible for other items such as cleats, socks, and water bottles.

Potential players can also sign up at the City of Melfort’s registration on Wednesday, March 27.
