“Surprising shock”: City of Melfort receives donation from Humboldt Strong Community Foundation

The City of Melfort has received a big donation from the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation.

The foundation that was created after the Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash on April 6 has decided to donate $100,000 to the City of Melfort in recognition of the communities participation after the crash.

Melfort Mayor Rick Lang called it a “suprising shock” when he and council learned of the donation.

“It was really quite surprising, I mean certainly appreciated,” Lang told northeastNOW. “It certainly shows the cooperative nature within the entire region for sure.”

Lang added that there is no decision yet on what will come of the donation, but there will be a process to determine what it will go towards.

“That’ll be going to community services,” Lang said. “There will be some recommendations brought to that committee meeting. Then there will be a committee of the whole scheduled so that all of council has some input as to the final decision. Then a decision will be made as to what exactly is going to be the benefit of the $100,000.”

A release from the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation said that it would mean a lot for the money to go towards something that “honours those on the bus,” but also honours the community.

A handful of other communities also received money from the foundation.

A date for an official cheque presentation has not yet been decided on.

The Humboldt Strong Community Foundation received over $19,000,000 being donated through GoFundMe in the days following the crash.
