NESPCA Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter

Progress being made on NESCPA shelter in Melfort

Mar 14, 2019 | 10:12 AM

As the weather warms up, progress continues on the North East SPCA(NESPCA) Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter in Melfort.

The build was put on hold due to snow and frigid temperatures over the past few months but construction is back in swing and work on the roof has now begun.

NESPCA Chair Pat Shiels said the shelter will serve a large area.

“We figured it out to be about the same population as the city of Prince Albert so about 34,000 people,” Shiels said. “I think we have 24 communities and 16 RM’s.”

The area reaches to the Manitoba border, up to the RM of Torch River which is just past Nipawin, down to Kinistino and across to Naicam.

Work on the roof of the building at 605 Hamilton Ave. has recently been started according to Shiels.

“Once the roof is finished, then we’ll be getting the siding on and getting doors in,” Shiels said.

The grand opening is being planned for the end of September with the project expected to be completed by late spring. The organization hopes to be operational in the summer.

“Hopefully we will start small and work our way up to our grand opening date,” Shiels said.
