Club Provincial Curling Championships set for Melfort next weekend

Mar 15, 2019 | 4:56 PM

Next weekend will be a busy one in Melfort as a number of curlers are set to descend on the city for their next provincial tournament.

Twelve mens teams and 11 women’s teams will compete in the event. Second Chair for the event, Gerald MacGillivray said it’s always good to have a provincial tournament in your city.

“Of course, we’ve got lots of hotels booked, and restaurants will be busy,” MacGillivray told northeastNOW.

Things kick off the morning of March 22 at the club, and four draws are scheduled for each day until Sunday. If there are any tiebreaking games necessary, they will take place Monday.

MacGillivray said that this tournament allows curling fans in the area see curlers they may not usually get to see.

“It’s not [curlers] that have gone to the Scotties, or the Brier, or anything like that,” he said. “It’s just your ordinary club curlers. Each club in Saskatchewan declares a champion out of their club. Then they go to [regionals] to play off for a spot to come to Melfort to play off in the provincials.”

MacGillivray said it’s one of the club members’ goals to host some sort of provincial championship in Melfort each year. This provincial tournament comes on the heels of the 2018 Provincial Scotties, held at the Northern Lights Palace.
