Outdoor rinks disappear with arrival of warm weather

Mar 20, 2019 | 3:30 PM

As spring approaches we say goodbye to winter activities in the city such as outdoor ice surfaces.

The warmer weather has melted the ice at the Dale Frier Memorial Rink and the crokicurl rink.

The arena located east of Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate on Brunswick St. operated by the Melfort Kinsmen is a main attraction for skaters and hockey players in the area.

Mike Cole said he locked up the warm-up shelter connected to the ice on Sunday afternoon.

“The center of the surface has already popped through so there is just kind of a ring around the edge from what’s left of the ice and it’s pretty much gone already,” Cole said. “I would think with the warmer weather there would be nothing but a big puddle in there right now.”

Cole said despite the colder winter, the arena was still utilized on a regular basis.

“We maybe lost about four weeks when no one wanted to be outside including us guys wanting to work on it so that cold snap just kinda pushed everybody away,” Cole said.

The surface is still open and Cole said kids are still welcome to go in and enjoy the puddles.

“Maybe start taking apart some boards and fixing up what needs to get fixed and give us enough time to have it ready for next season,” Cole said.

On Monday, the city of Melfort made a Facebook post stating the Crokicurl rink was also closed for the season.

It was the very first season for Crokicurl in Melfort and Recreation Programmer Shannon Marshall said the game will be back next year.
