Allan Flames claim Wheatland Hockey League Championship

The 2019 Wheatland Senior Hockey League title goes to the Allan Flames.

The Flames beat the Kinistino Tigers on Friday night 3-2 in overtime to sweep the playoff series.

Assistant Captain Evan Pasternak said they had some extra ambition in the final series.

“Last year, they swept us in the final so returning back to the final against them I think we kinda had something to prove,” Pasternak said. “I think we were pretty down a bit after last year’s finals since getting swept is never the best.”

The team didn’t necessarily have high hopes at the start of season but it was a big victory for the team after battling injuries through the season.

The Flames paved themselves a nice path to the final playoffs with the Kinistino Tigers after winning their series against the Jansen Jets 3-2 and Craik Warriors 3-1.

“It was just our hard work and efforts,” Pasternak said. “We just came together as a group and we were playing really good hockey, and battled through and really put it all out there.”

Hockey is important to the community of Allan and that has amplified a bit more this season after a loss to the hockey community as well as the town itself.

The late captain of the Humboldt Broncos Logan Schatz is from Allan and the town recently renamed its skating rink after the 20-year-old.

“I feel like we definitely had a big boost with having him in our thoughts,” Pasternak said.

This is the Flames’ sixth championship over the span of the last 12 years.

“I’ve played on the team for the past 10 years or so now and getting to play with guys that I grew up with and went to school with is very special,” Pasternak said. “I’ve played sports with some of these guys for you could say, 20 plus years so for us to win as a team it does really mean a lot to me personally.”

The games in Allan were very well attended this season and Pasternak said members can really feel the community support behind them.

Some core veterans could be “packing it in” according to Pasternak so it could be a turning point for the team where they may have to look at bit of a rebuild.

“I think its just been an awesome run and a great team,” he said.
