Government announces funds for Melfort water treatment plant; city still faced with water loss issues

The federal and provincial governments recently announced funds for water and wastewater systems in the province with some of those funds coming to Melfort.

Upgrades to the SaskWater treatment plant in the city will be made with those funds.

The upgrades are valuable to the city but Mayor Rick Lang said it does not impact the water loss and more needs to be done.

“To do something meaningful we are looking at something that’s in excess of a $10 million project,” Lang said.

The city is preparing an application for funding through the two levels of government that would cover all but 33 per cent of that $10 million.

Lang told northeastNOW last year, there were more than 52 water breaks in the city and an average of one per week have been experienced thus far in 2018 leading to a major loss of funds.

“Things aren’t getting any better and the thought is that things are going to get worse,” Lang said.

The federal and provincial infrastructure funding across Canada is around $84 million according to Lang so the city is looking for funding to allocate directly in dealing with the water loss situation.
