The Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance made a stop in Melfort April 10 for one of their Contractors’ Breakfasts.

The stop in Melfort is one of 30 in the province through the month.

A sub-committee works with the non-profit through the year to put on the events. One of those members, Garry Aveyard, who currently works for SaskTel said the key of the event is to promote safe digging.

“We speak about the importance of making SaskFirst call your first call, your priority call,” Aveyard told northeastNOW. “And then understanding that it’s not your only call. There’s many other facilities and infrastructure that’s potentially underground. So, it’s important to understand that you have to phone other people or find out what else is underground to make those calls so you’re safe digging.”

April is Safe Digging Month, and the SCGA scheduled 30 breakfasts because it is the 30th anniversary of them hosting the events.

For Aveyard personally, he said being involved is important to him because of the safety aspect of it.

“There’s so much things under ground that might not hurt you personally,” he said. “But if you do hit something like a fiber line or a communication line, or anything like that, you could potentially knockout a hundred miles of telecommunication, depending on what line you hit.”

He said when digging without knowing whats underground, things like hospitals and cell towers could be knocked out.

Aveyard added if there are others interested, they would add to the 30 events, but he promoted others check their website for a video on safe digging. He said it’s a good way for smaller businesses to have staff meetings and talk about safe digging.

Prince Albert hosted a breakfast on April, 9, while Nipawin (April 11), Humboldt (April 17), Watrous (April 18), and Wynyard (April 24) are on the schedule for later in the month.
