Humboldt and Area Team T1D honoured with JDRF award

The Humboldt and Area Team T1D has been honoured with a national award from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

The team received the Community Volunteer of the Year Award for 2018 after raising over $41,800 to go toward research for type one diabetes treatment, and improving the lives of those living with the disease.

The group consists for people from the area who either have diabetes or have family members with it. Member Maria Strasser said the group does more than just fundraise.

“We were finding that we were spending a whole lot of time at our meetings talking about what was going on in our lives, and how to deal with illness and who’s the newly diagnosed, and how do we support one another,” Strasser told northeastNOW. “We decided, let’s develop a team that isn’t only based around fundraisers, but that actually helps support each other.”

Humboldt and area Team T1D’s biggest fundraiser is the JDRF Walk in Humboldt taking place in June this year. The fundraiser is 14 years old, and Strasser said they just want to continue raising more money.

“Normally on the walk for the past 14 years that we’ve had it, we have a fundraising goal and we usually raise around that $30,000,” she said. “All of these extra little fundraisers help add up to that $41,000, so we’re just hoping to grow it every year.”

Some of the other fundraisers include a puck toss at the Humboldt Broncos hockey games, a kuchen fundraiser, a golf tournament, Bad Moms movie nights, and many others.

Some members of the team will receive the award at the Annual JDRF Awards Dinner and Conference held in Toronto on April 30, and May 1.
