Humboldt Golf Club changing approach for 2019

Apr 23, 2019 | 12:00 PM

The Humboldt Golf Club held its annual general meeting on April 16 to update their members of what’s to come in 2019.

It’s the first golf season under new general manager Corey Schweitzer and financial manager Mike Weber, whose appointments were announced on March 15.

Kirk Plemel, president of the Humboldt Golf Club, told northeastNOW the first month with Schweitzer and Weber has gone well.

“They’ve spent countless hours in there getting things ready,” Plemel said. “They’ve done a good job of getting out in the community and I think that’s been part of our problem in the past. Prior years when we had a lot more members, the golf kind of came to you. Now we’ve got to do a bit of marketing, get out there, and bring in the people.”

Bringing in more members is a key goal from the Humboldt Golf Club in 2019, as they ran into a near $28,000 deficit in 2018 after they only went down $800 the year before.

Plemel said the financial losses have been disappointing, although he mentioned the golf industry has been a tough business to be in the last number of years.

“We’re definitely not the only golf course in that situation,” he said. “People are busier now. We’re competing with a lot of different summer activities and people don’t just do one activity in the summer. Our memberships slowly declining over the years have been part of it and I don’t think we adapted as well as we could have either.

“We’ve got to change with the times. Managing it under the old business model doesn’t work with the shifting demographic in golf.”

Plemel said the Humboldt Golf Club’s goal for 2019 is to get out a deficit and put money into reserves for upgrades to the golf course, clubhouse, and equipment.
