Warm weather a welcome sight for farmers in Quill Lakes area

Farmers in the Quill Lakes area are seeing a bit of a break when it comes to the flooding concerns that have plagued their land for many years.

The Quill Lakes water seems to be receding, as there was only four centimeters in spring run-off this year.

Many hectares of farmland have been consumed by the flooding from the original lakes.

Local farmer Dwight Odelein said drivers on highways 6 and 16 won’t have to deal with water splashing up on the highway either.

“The lake is down from it’s peak, I think it would be about 50 centimeters. I think it peaked in about June of 2017 at 521 meters above sea level and its at 520.5,” Odelein said. “If we get the same amount of rain as we have in the last couple of years it is going to recede.”

According to Odelein, the water is heading into the right direction with a nice slow melt this year with precipitation being able to just soak into the ground.

“Most of the run-off that’s going to happen has happened,” Odelein said.

The water has actually receded visibly from where it was previously. Odelein is hopeful that it will recede even more as the summer progresses.
