Convicted poacher back in court

A Prince Albert-area man who engaged in illegal hunting activities four years ago and was fined over $6,000, is again accused of hunting violations. Douglas Carl Risling, 59, appeared Tuesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court in relation to a ticket issued last fall.

According to court documents obtained by paNOW, Risling was issued a ticket Oct. 21, 2018 in the Fort a la Corne area.

Risling is charged with breaching section 12 of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Act, which prohibits a non-Treaty person from helping someone with Treaty status hunt for food. Risling was issued a fine of $1,400.

In February 2015, Risling was one of two men who illegally killed an elk on private farmland near St. Louis. Risling later pleaded guilty to four charges, including unlawfully hunting elk, unlawful possession of caribou antlers, illegal storage of a handgun and possession of a restricted handgun without a licence. For his involvement, Risling was fined $6,640 and received a one-year probation. He also received a two-year suspension for hunting and trapping.

Risling is scheduled to enter a plea on the 2018 charge in court on May 28.

Don Earhart, vice president of the Prince Albert Wildlife Federation told paNOW he could not comment on the specifics of the case but speaking generally, said he hopes there is more done to deter these types of incidents.
