‘It’s time to move on’: Meyers steps down as Mustangs’ assistant coach

The Melfort Mustangs bench will be short a cowboy hat next season.

Dan Meyers, most known for wearing his black cowboy hat behind the bench has decided to step down as assistant coach of the Melfort Mustangs after four seasons in the position.

“It’s the busyness of life I guess it’s called,” Meyers said.

Meyers joined the Melfort Mustangs’ coaching staff prior to the 2015/2016 season under Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins. They won the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League title that season, the franchise’s second in a row. Meyers said each team was different.

“That was a great year, a great group of guys there,” Meyers told northeastNOW. “Then the next two years, we were rebuilding or whatever you want to call it. Last year we had a good team as well, just didn’t pan out. So it was good.”

Over the last two seasons with the team, Meyers got to do something that not many people get to do — coach their son at the Junior A level of hockey. Tyson Meyers joined the Mustangs full-time for the 2017/2018 season and Dan said it was one of the best parts of his time with the team.

“That was probably the most special part about it, to be with him,” Meyers said. “And just going along as games go, as bus trips go, hoteling it, the whole experience of the game. “

Meyers added that there was “lots of good bus trips, and lots of good people.”

The Melfort native said his passion for coaching was not only on the ice.

“I love the game,” Meyers said. “I played it back, 25, 28 years ago, whenever it was, quite a while ago. I loved the game then. I coached minor hockey all the way up. Just being around the guys, trying to help them with the game, and things off ice as well.”

As for the next step for Meyers? He said this summer they are doing a bit of a move, and he plans to focus a little bit more on his cattle. But don’t expect to never see him at a hockey rink again. He said he plans to be in the seats watching his son next season with the Mustangs.

Meyers also thanked the Melfort Mustangs organization, and his wife for allowing him to coach.
