Campgrounds prepare for May Long Weekend

With an extra day to spend time with friends and loved ones, Victoria Day long weekend serves an occasion for families to camp outdoors.

While one Saskatchewan campground doesn’t appear to have an abnormally large crowd coming its way, a fair number of campers are expected to make their way out.

“We don’t have a resort and it’s not so much a destination campground as provincial parks are, but what we find is our biggest bonus for people is being centrally located,” Executive Director of the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce Brent Fitzpatrick told northeastNOW. “They have no water and there’s no amenity, but it’s such a centralized place to be that it’s very popular already.”

The Humboldt Campground is run by the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce. Fitzpatrick said they get their fair share of tourists with the location being off the Saskatchewan Highway 5, but a hectic crowd for May Long doesn’t appear to be headed toward them.

For Humboldt campers, there won’t be any worries for campfires, despite the increasing temperatures.

“When the R.M. had a campfire ban, [the City of Humboldt} didn’t,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s a matter of having fires responsibly. The campground itself isn’t all that dry and we’re expecting three days of rain this week. I’m not really concerned about the campfires.”

The Humboldt Campground will open on Thursday, May 16, one night before the May Long Weekend begins.
