Safety in School Zones

City of Melfort, Brunswick School benefitting from Traffic Safety Fund Grant

May 14, 2019 | 5:05 PM

The City of Melfort was one of the beneficiaries of the recent announcement from the Saskatchewan Government.

The announcement came from the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund as almost $500,000 was awarded to various municipalities. The money for the grants comes from photo speed enforcement in the province.

Melfort was awarded $17,500 to go towards school zone upgrades around Brunswick Elementary School, including crosswalks, and new signage in the area.

Brunswick School Principal Rodney White said hearing that there is money coming is just another part of them making sure all students are safe coming to, and leaving school.

“We want to be proactive and make sure there aren’t any issues,” White told northeastNOW. “And anything that can enhance those crosswalks to give them more of a highlight for traffic in the area is a bonus for our students for safety for sure.”

White said the school and the city have been in talks for a while about various concerns around the safety at certain intersections of the school, and he said that the conversations have been good and productive.

“We obviously want to work together,” White said. “I know they have the same interest of safety as well. But it’s just for us kind of giving a highlight of ‘hey there are these specific areas that are heavy traffic areas before and after school, so is there something more we can do about it’, and they’ve been receptive.”

White added that there are multiple concerns around the school as to what needs to be addressed, but one thing he mentioned was the increased amount of ‘non-school related’ traffic in the area.

“We’ve seen those increased flows over the years with Melfort growing,” he said. “We just wanted to highlight to the city that ‘hey these are areas that, these people aren’t even associated with our school but they’re driving by our school. So we wanted to highlight that, can we look at these different crosswalks to make them safer.”

There is no word exactly yet from the City of Melfort on what exactly is going to happen with the funds, but one area that has garnered a lot of attention in recent weeks has been the intersection of Scotia Street and Bemister Avenue East. A concerned citizen had brought forward to council the idea of having a four-way stop there. The city also brought in an expert to examine the area to see what could be done to improve safety, not only at that intersection, but all of them around Brunswick School.
