Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was the Lion’s Park in Tisdale.

The Spray Park and playground has seen some gradual change with equipment upgrading over at least 10 years, thanks to funding from the Tisdale Lion L’s and manual labour from the Tisdale Lions Club.

Sharon Allan, a member of the Tisdale Lion L’s for nearly 30 years, told northeastNOW the process of upgrading equipment has been so long that she couldn’t remember an exact year when it began.

“It started when the Lions put in the spray park,” Allan said. “We started putting in equipment, and we’ve put in equipment three or four times over the past 10 years. It felt like a really nice project for our group. We purchased equipment and the Lions installed it; that was our deal.”

After some of the equipment was deemed unsafe over time, the Tisdale Lion L’s made the Lions Park upgrades one of their biggest projects.

Allan said a lot of the inspiration to upgrade the Lion’s Park came from within the group.

“We’re a women’s group, so we had young members who had children who went to the park,” she said.

“Because we’re not a big club with a lot of money, we’d put in two pieces this year and three pieces the next year, until we finally got what we wanted.”

The newer equipment which was installed on Friday, May 10 cost around $15,000 and all the equipment in total cost $60,000. The Lion L’s consistently held various fundraisers to cover the costs, but received some help in the form of a cement donation from Little Redi Mix, equipment and sand donation from Chupa Trucking and Excavating, and a grant from Cornerstone Credit Union.

“We couldn’t have done this ourselves,” Allan said.

Although the first day of the new equipment being ready to play on was muggy and rainy, Allan had a chance to see the Lion’s Park in action on a sunny Mother’s Day.

“There are tons of kids over there,” she said. “On a [sunny day] I guarantee you, if you go by that park there are going to be kids there. Lots of moms take their little kids there and that’s why it’s really nice. There’s stuff there that little guys can use.

“It’s a really rewarding activity.”
