Humboldt resident to take part in tenth MS Walk

The Saskatchewan Blue Cross MS walk in Melfort is coming up on May 26.

Participants will go on a 3 km walk from the Kerry Vickar Centre starting at 3 p.m. in an effort to raise awareness for Multiple Sclerosis.

Walk coordinator Kat Matlock said the walks are an ongoing tradition.

“We’ve been doing walks in Canada with the MS Society for over 20 years, so it’s been going on for a while,” Matlock said. “There are about 150 or so events across Canada.”

The walk is to bring awareness and funds for the MS Society of Canada.

Over $20,000 was raised in Melfort last year.

“Our goal this year $16,500 and I think that we will surpass that for sure.”

Anywhere from 60 or more participants are expected to attend this year. Pre-registrations are encouraged but will also be taken at the event.

“MS effects everyone and not just the person with the diagnosis so it really is a community effort to come out and walk and raise funds to hopefully find a cure for MS,” Matlock said.

Lisa Sellinger from Humboldt will participate in her tenth MS walk this year with about six of those being in Melfort.

Sellinger was diagnosed with MS 11 years ago and lost of sight in one eye, but she lives relatively symptom free today.

“I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to the unpredictably of MS,” Sellinger said.

The walks continue to be important for Sellinger to see the support from friends and family.

Participants are encouraged to raise funds ahead of the walk events, which Sellinger is getting help with through the Humbodlt Sobeys and the Humboldt Co-op C-Store.

Sellinger is at about 40 per cent of her $30,000 goal.
