Moose Jaw farmer sues Bayer, Monsanto claiming Roundup caused his cancer

A Saskatchewan farmer has launched a class action lawsuit against two agribusiness companies alleging Roundup gave him cancer.

In a statement of claim, 62-year-old Garry Gadd from the Moose Jaw area is suing Bayer and Monsanto, claiming an ingredient in the herbicide caused him to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma — a type of cancer that primarily affects white blood cells.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

His lawyer, Tony Merchant, said Gadd used the weed killer for years on his farm and was never warned about the fumes.

Roundup’s active ingredient is glyphosate, a Health Canada-approved herbicide that is in more than 130 products sold across Canada.

Merchant said his firm has been looking into the effects of the glyphosate-based product since 2011.

The news comes days after a California couple was awarded a massive settlement in a lawsuit involving Roundup in the United States.

Bayer Canada, the company that acquired Monsanto in 2018, said it is limited in what it can say about the case but is aware of the legal action.
