Humboldt getting set for 15th Juvenile Diabetes walk

The community of Humboldt will walk to raise awareness and funds for Type 1 diabetes on the first Sunday of June.

With around 30 families in the area with Type 1 diabetes, the 15th annual walk is important.

Organizer Cailin Hergott said last year the organization raised over $42,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

“I’d love to see us get to $45,000 but every dollar counts and we know that there is a lot of amazing research being done that this money goes towards,” Hergott said.

The walk that typically sees around 100 participants begins and ends at the uniplex and is followed by a barbecue lunch.

“You dont have to have Type 1 to join us, you can have Type 1 in your family or not; we will take support from wherever,” Hergott said.

The walk is just one of the events that brings in funds that are donated to the JDRF. A golf tournament, skate-a-thon and movie nights also contribute to the final total.

On June 1, Shelby Shamenauer is having her annual golf tournament at LeRoy Golf Course which includes 18 holes of golf and a steak supper.

This year’s youth ambassador is Jayde Otsig who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 13. Otsig will cut the ribbon at the walk and will speak about her past few years of living with diabetes.

“She is succeeding with her Type 1 so we are hoping that the younger kids can see that and have someone to look up to,” Hergott said.

Last year’s youth ambassadors were Duke Brochu and former Humboldt Bronco Kaleb Dahlgren. Brochu was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the fall of 2017 at the age of 10 and Dahlgren was diagnosed when he was four years old.

Over 276,000 Saskatchewan residents are impacted by diabetes.
