NESD to spend $150,000 on MUCC washroom renovations

The North East School Division (NESD) Board of Education agreed to spend $150,000 to renovate the washrooms at Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC).

Funding for the project comes from over $450,000 in deferred revenue from federal capital tuition – a portion of the tuition received from the federal government that was set aside by school divisions for future projects in schools that include the federal students.

The washrooms are going to be updated and converted to multi-use facilities.

Don Rempel, NESD director of education, said the change to the MUCC washrooms is to create a safe and inclusive environment.

“Schools are a lot different today in their building standards and expectations than when they were built 50 years ago,” Rempel said. “We’re playing catch-up with some of our older models. We look at where we can make the biggest impact to make a positive environment for our students and I think that’s where our facilities got to with the current high schools.

“There was a time in Melfort where the industrial arts wing only had boys’ washrooms because girls didn’t take shop 50 years ago. It’s a needed update.”

Rempel said MUCC washrooms weren’t previously gender neutral, and non-binary people not having a safe place to use the washroom was part of the conversations about the upgrades.

Renovations for MUCC’s washrooms are expected to be worked on during the 2019-20 fiscal year.
