Melfort KidSport holds barbecue to wrap up KidSport month

Money shouldn’t prevent children from playing sports.

That was the main takeaway from this month as the KidSport organization raised awareness in Saskatchewan.

KidSport is a non-profit group that helps pay for registering kids into organized sports, who wouldn’t otherwise be able to participate. =

“No one should be denied sports because they can’t afford it,” Board Member Rick Robins told northeastNOW. “What KidSport does is help those who can’t afford to play sports, giving them the ability to play.”

The Melfort group held one of its many fundraisers on Thursday, May 30 at the Melfort Mall, barbecuing burgers for the many people who attended. The line was constant as people came to support KidSport. Through the two-hour event, the group raised $1,500 in total.

Robins said they need all of their fundraisers to help as many kids as they can to play sports, and the price for every sport varies as to what KidSport can cover.

“Fifty to 80 per cent of the funding, and in some cases it’s 100 per cent of the funding,” he said. “It can vary anywhere between $100 up as high as $700 for one kid to play a sport.”

In 2018, the group raised over $13,000 and helped 54 kids play various sports in the area including; basketball, football, equestrian, volleyball, taekwondo, lacrosse, softball, soccer, hockey, and figure skating.
