RCMP discover stolen vehicle out of Ontario, charge two

Jun 5, 2019 | 3:53 PM

Two people from Ontario were charged after Wynyard RCMP discovered a vehicle stolen out of Ontario.

On June 3, RCMP saw two people acting suspiciously at a local gas station, and after running the vehicle’s plates, it was discovered to be stolen out of Ontario.

The officer then followed the vehicle on Highway 16 into Wynyard where a traffic stop was attempted. The vehicle then fled at high speeds and RCMP decided not to pursue due to the risk to public safety.

Officers then set up a perimeter once the suspect vehicle left town on a grid road and were able to contain the vehicle, before the driver ran over the deployed spike belts. The vehicle eventually stopped once the rubber on the tire separated from the rim on Highway 16.

The driver and passenger, both from Ontario, were arrested without incident.

Twenty-three-year-old John Richard Hipwell’s charges include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of stolen property, flight from police, and driving while prohibited.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Lonnie Herrington is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, and possession of stolen property.

Both appeared in Yorkton Provincial Court on Tuesday, June 4.
