Village of Codette celebrating landmark event

Jun 11, 2019 | 2:00 PM

The Village of Codette will soon be celebrating a landmark with a party in the park.

To celebebrate the village’s 90th birthday, a number of activities are planned, including a barbecue, birthday cake, bouncy castle, horse wagon rides, memorabilia, music, and a slideshow going over Codette’s 90 years.

Sharlene Penner, longtime resident and volunteer in Codette, said the small village feels a sense of accomplishment reaching 90 years.

“Codette and district has been able to keep its identity as a close-knit rural community where we still know our neighbours,” Penner said “We can still say they live at so and so’s place – even though so and so hasn’t lived there for decades. The Village council and the Community Centre wanted to hold an event to celebrate and reflect back on the last 90 years as a way to catch up with old friends, make new ones and show off our community spirit.”

The now flooded Bushfield Flats, and area north of Codette, was originally inhabited by local Cree tribes before the first trading post was opened in 1768. The first steps towards settlement began in 1904 when a detailed survey of the area began, but it became known as Codette after the Canadian Pacific Railway Purchased the town-site and extended to the area in 1924.

In a public meeting, it was decided that the town-site would be named after Jean Baptiste Cadotte, a fur trader that had traveled the Saskatchewan River with Peter Pond and Alexander Henry in the 1770s.

At the time it was believed that Cadotte had drowned in the rapids on the river near the town-site, although it’s now probable he didn’t drown and instead passed away in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. years after retiring from the fur trading business.

In honour of the early traveller, the name “Cadotte Station” was chosen. Unfortunately for Cadotte, the official name of the town was misspelled on the incorporation paperwork, giving the town the name of Codette instead of Cadotte.

The Village of Codette’s 90th birthday will take place at the Codette Community Centre on Thursday, June 20 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
