Northeast restaurateur opens second Spot in Tisdale

Five months after she purchased a building in Tisdale, Karinne Seiferling has opened her second restaurant in Northeast Saskatchewan.

Seiferling has owned and operated her fulltime restaurant ‘The Spot’ in Nipawin for over a year after three years of running a seasonal restaurant in Carrot River, and now The Spot in Tisdale opened on June 14.

However, just because Seiferling opened up restaurants before, doesn’t mean there weren’t learning curves.

“We walked into this building and it was subfloor and walls,” Seiferling told northeastNOW. “The process of opening was a lot longer and a total new experience for me; everything from timelines to contractors. Nipawin was a face lift of the dining room, the kitchen was already there. I would do it all over again for sure, but I actually know now what I wouldn’t do. Each venue has been a different experience and I just learn more with each one.”

When the thought of venturing out to another community came to mind, Seiferling prepared herself and The Spot staff in Nipawin for the reality of her not being around as much. The new venture required her to take a step back in Nipawin and rely on her front manager and chef.

Seiferling said having a solid staff to hold the fort in Nipawin gave her the confidence to pursue opening The Spot in Tisdale, and for that she’s grateful.

“I’m definitely hands on and I enjoy being out at both places,” she said. “Unfortunately, I can’t be at two places at once.

“This is the longest I’ve been away from the Nipawin location. I miss everybody, but I know they’re killing it there. That additional stress would be a lot on my plate.”

The Spot’s goal since its inception has been to bring homestyle cooking all demographics in a mod environment.

“There are not many small towns where you find a modern-style restaurant,” Seiferling said. “We’re not fine dining by any means, but if you want to come in here on a date night, wear a dress, heels, and a buttoned up shirt, of course, it totally goes with the décor and the ambience and the food. You can have a crew coming in from work on the road outside and sit in the lounge feeling comfortable wearing their steel-toe boots and jeans. I want to create an environment where you get the best of both worlds and you have the option of spending whatever is in your budget.”

Seiferling hopes to see The Spot reach out, participate, and be a sponsor in Tisdale the same way it’s been in Nipawin, although the current focus is to get the actual restaurant up and running.

“We did just move here a couple of weeks ago and I’m excited to meet people,” she said. “I’m from Nipawin, so I know a lot of faces that walk through the door. In Tisdale, I don’t know that many people, but my business partners do.

“It’s been an enjoyable experience. Ups and downs, peaks and valleys, but I’m excited to get this place open.”
