‘Something different’: artist Linsey Levendall begins work on community mural

World renowned artist and Melfort resident Linsey Levendall is making his mark on the city of Melfort.

The Community Mural project is being painted on the south-side of the George Home Hardware building over the next two weeks.

The wall between Home Hardware and the historic post office was ideal according to Levendall.

“The old meeting ground for the town just kind of made sense to do something that was central,” Levendall said. “People just kind of hanging out and just interacting with the space.”

Levendall told northeastNOW the project is a way to beautify a community space and also to reach out to youth who may have an interest in art.

“I never got that kind of feedback or have an artist come into my town,” Levendall said. “For me this is a way to connect with maybe the lost teenager who maybe isn’t into sports and is looking for something a little more expressive.”

The artist said he hopes to engage a lot with the community over the course of the painting project and he encourages those who are interested to stop by the site.

“I think when people see it there will be a little part of themselves that they can leave with it or take away from it,” Levendall said.

The project is something Levendall wanted to do for a number of years.

“I’ve been living here for about seven years and I’ve been doing artwork everywhere else but in Melfort,” Levendall said.

Levendall has been part of the mural festival in Montreal and Vancouver. He also did a similar mural in Vancouver and the response was “overwhelming.”

The project is a partnership between the artist, Communities in Bloom, and the City of Melfort.

“The whole project is for people to kind of wander in and see something different, see an artist work, and see the public space change before their eyes,” he said.
