Model trains and train rides in store for Wakaw and Cudworth during railway days

The Wheatland Express has only been in operation for about a year now but the venture has really picked up steam.

This weekend, the excursion train that runs between the town’s of Wakaw and Cudworth will be highlighted with Railway Days.

Director of Marketing and Operations, Ashlyn Weninger said the two-day event is something new for their team.

“We’re hoping that this year will be a kick-off point that we can expand and grow to make it bigger and better for future years,” Weninger said.

Railway days will feature a model train show from different model railroad clubs and train rides on the Wheatland Express. Departure times for the train will vary.

The inaugural season of the Wheatland Express provided 25 tours for over 3,800 people which was a lot more than they had originally anticipated.

“We only thought we would do eight tours for 800 people,” Weninger said. “The response has just been incredible and we are having a lot fun.”

More cars were added over the winter to accommodate more passengers and the themes and shows on the train have also expanded.

“We’ve had people come from as far as Germany, Australia, and the U.K.,” Weninger said.

To top of a successful first season, the Wheatland Express was honoured with the Rookie of the Year award at the 2018 Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence.

Weninger told northeastNOW she was unsure how many visitors they anticipate for railway days on Saturday and Sunday but she isn’t too concerned.

“With adding the new railcars, we can add onto our lineup if we do need to accommodate more people so we’re ready for whatever the days bring,” Weninger said.

There will be different local community groups set up with food booths in both locations for the duration of the two events. A pancake breakfast kicks off the day on Sunday.
