Northeast Warriors hockey team donates to Star City School

The Star City School received a donation on Thursday, June 20 from a local recreation hockey team.

The Northeast Warriors play their season out of the Star City rink and host their annual Ziggy Cup tournament there as well. This year, the team decided to donate the funds from bottles that were collected at the tournament to the school. The total ended up being around $120, and Warrior Captain Linden Harper said it’s nice to be able to give back to the community that treats them so well throughout the season.

“In previous years we’ve gave back to the boy scouts, the girl guides, stuff like that,” Harper said. “So this year giving money back to the Star City School, it’s a nice gesture for us to do, and they’ll put it to something good.”

The tournament ran this year from March 8 to 10, 2019 and featured men’s and women’s teams from across the province.

Dwayne Burke is a teacher at the Star City School and said getting donations like this really gives students opportunities.

“It’s special because we are identified as an active school and an active community doing things where kids can increase their capacity in activities and in sports, and in community functioning,” Burke told northeastNOW.

He added the school has a rich history of athletics and success in different sports, and to be able to continue providing those is nice.

“When we do have these donations, oftentimes it’s a surprise, so we don’t always know where they’re coming from or going to,” Burke said. “Chances are it will probably go towards sporting equipment, or other special events that have us engaging in activities and getting us out and about.”
