Trojan defenceman, Melfort native heading to Czech Republic to play ball hockey

A Tisdale Trojan is continuing to play some hockey this summer, but not on the ice.

2003-born defenceman Jeremy Hancock has been selected to play for Team Canada West at the World Under-16 Ball Hockey Championships in the Czech Republic, taking place from June 27 to 30.

The Melfort product said it hasn’t been very long since he started playing ball hockey. Hancock said it started when his friends team needed some more players, and through that the team went to nationals, where Hancock was picked out by Team Canada scouts for the tournament.

“Literally a year,” he said. “Mostly just for fun, and we’ll see what happens here.”

Hancock played some of his Bantam hockey in Edmonton, and he said he knows some of the other players going as well through his time in Edmonton. He said the sport of ball hockey is really unique.

“It’s like hockey, but it really isn’t,” Hancock told northeastNOW. “I don’t know, it’s got it’s own twists that just makes it so much fun to play.”

Hancock will stay on the blue line for the tournament and play defence as he would in ice hockey. He said the experience of the tournament should be a lot of fun.

“Just hoping to bring the gold home obviously,” Hancock said. “But, other than that, have a good catch up with my buddies and just have a good vacation, and have fun.”

Lots of young hockey players play baseball, golf, or other summer sports, and Hancock said he likes golf as well, but ball hockey seems to be his offseason sport.

“Hopefully just keep playing hockey as my main sport,” he said. “But have this to cool me down in the summertime and to relax with.”

The big defenceman joked the sport is great for his conditioning, allowing him to avoid those type of workouts when training for ice hockey. He also said the sport helps with hand-eye as well, but the sport is still very different from ice hockey.

With the Trojans in the 2018/2019 season, his first in Midget, Hancock tallied four goals and four assists in 44 games. He was also a second round pick of the Melfort Mustangs in the 2018 SJHL Draft.
