Planning for Melfort Fair in full swing for Ag Society

Less than a month remains until the Melfort Fair takes place from July 19 to 21.

The Melfort Ag Society is well into planning for the event this year, and they have added a new event.

A barbecue cookoff will be added this year, something that Ag Society President, Wayne Claggett says allows some of those backyard barbecue experts to show off their stuff.

“Lots of people watch it on TV and things like that,” he said. “I think it would be a wonderful addition to our exhibition.”

All the same events will still be taking place like it past years, including the motocross. Claggett said is an attraction that continues to grow.

“For the motocross, I think it will be bigger and better than ever,” Claggett told northeastNOW. “Every year we seem to be increasing, we’re building better jumps, expanding a little bit more. It’s getting to be quite an entertainment thing.”

The light horse show, as well as chuckwagons will still be there as well

The Ag Society also decided to add a Friday night grandstand show.

“We usually do the Friday night motocross under the lights, that was kind of our entertainment for the evening,” Claggett said. “But some people still wanted something at the grandstand.”

Friday’s entertainment will be a comedian, followed by Saskatchewan music group HOJA on Saturday, and Indigo Circus will be back for Sunday’s entertainment.

As for the parade this year, entries are being taken already, and theme for this year will be the Spirit of Melfort and District.

“Anything that kind of relates to what goes on in Melfort here and our area,” Claggett said. “Things like the baseball teams, the hockey teams, you know, the spirit of Melfort.”

The mile long parade will take place on Friday.

Anyone interested in participating in the parade, or any other events at the Fair, they are encouraged to call the Ag Society office.
