Work rolls along at Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter

Work continues to roll along at the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter in Melfort.

According to Shelter Manager, Meagan Schmitz, things are moving at a good pace as they get closer to their planned grand opening on September 27.

“All the drywall is primed and ready to paint, so I think the painting is going to start happening in the next week or so,” Schmitz told northeastNOW. “The tin is just about done, and then the guys have started all the duct work in there as well. So, things are looking good and they’re rolling pretty quickly.”

Schmitz said even after a tough winter, things are moving on time as of now.

As for the funds needed to be raised for the project, Schmitz said there’s still some work to be done.

“Once everything is said and done, once the shelter is finished,” she said. “We’ve got all the kennels, the furnishings, the tubs, the sinks, the bathroom, all the finishing details, it’s going to be about $1 million and to date we have raised about $450,000.”

Schmitz said they are still asking for donations and sponsorships for the project. Schmitz added while they’d like to pay for the shelter sooner rather than later, they will work with sponsors.

“If an organization or a business or an individual wants to do it for a couple of years, doing a payment plan, we are absolutely open to that as well because we know it’s a lot of money to ask for a big lump sum in a chunk like that,” she said.

The Northeast SPCA also has a few fundraisers currently underway and coming up. They have just wrapped up selling their cash calendars and draws are underway. The group will also be bartending at a few events in the area as well. They will be running the beer gardens at the Melfort Fair, and bartending a wedding on July 27. They are looking for volunteers that are over 19 for both events.
