It was a successful journey overseas for Melfort native Jeremy Hancock while at the World Under-16 Ball Hockey Championships.

Hancock was in the Czech Republic as part of Team Canada West at the end of June for the three day tournament. Team Canada West went 5-0 in pool play, defeating the Czech Republic, Canada East, the Czech Republic Under-15 squad, Great Britain, and Slovakia. That set up a matchup with Team Canada East in the final. The team from out West ended up winning the game by an 8-6 score. Hancock said it was nice to get to play with some friends he hadn’t seen in a while.

“I got to catch up with all of them,” he said. “And I just really enjoyed winning with them.”

He added that it felt like they had everyone behind them in the final.

“It’s pretty cool when you win and get to hear your anthem,” Hancock told northeastNOW. “That’s so sweet.”

The big 2003-born defenceman ended the tournament with two assists while contributing defensively to a backend that allowed only eight goals in pool play.

Hancock was part of the Tisdale Trojans squad that hosted, and won the 2019 Telus Cup Western Regionals tournament, then went on to win bronze at the Telus Cup in Thunder Bay. He said the experience in the Czech Republic is definitely up there with some of his other sporting accomplishments.

“Probably just as fun, or maybe about the same as winning the championship last year in Edmonton last year,” he said. “Or maybe, I’m not sure, not quite comparable to Telus, but still, it’s right up there.”

In the end, Hancock and his team played six games in a very short span. After recently getting back to Canada, Hancock said he got back into the gym and definitely noticed a difference.

“I definitely noticed, I can ride the bike hard for 15 minutes and barely even break a sweat,” he said. “Just from running my [expletive] off every day.”

Not only was the trip to the Czech Republic a great athletic experience for Hancock, it was a nice vacation as well.

“The buildings and everything there are so cool,” Hancock said. “And I’m really interested in the World Wars and how they started, so we went to a concentration camp … it was cool.”

Hancock said during summer he’ll get back to the gym and begin getting ready for ice hockey season. He added that he’d like to get some fishing in as well.

As for where he will play hockey next season, Hancock still has two more years of Midget eligibility, but hopes that playing at the Junior A level with the Melfort Mustangs is a possibility.
