Kinistino Communities in Bloom prepared for Class of Champions competition

As president of Kinistino Communities in Bloom (CiB), Angie Bragg took her final drive through town and made sure everything is tidy.

Lawns need to be trimmed and weeds need to be picked before judges from Canada CiB arrive to Kinistino on Thursday, July 18.

The Town of Kinistino is one of four communities – along with Ashcroft, B.C., Hanna, Alta., and Indian Head, Sask. – in the CiB Class of Champions’ Small Category, which a CiB competition featuring previous winners at the national level.

Bragg said Kinistino CiB was ready to move up a level after winning the national category in 2015.

“We’ve been competing class of champions since 2016,” Bragg told northeastNOW. “Once you win nationals, then you compete against all the winners in a class of champions category. If we win class of champions, then we can compete internationally.”

The biggest challenge for Kinistino CiB isn’t ensuring the neighbourhoods are tidy or watering and planting the flowers, but finding enough volunteers to get the town ready for display.

Thankfully for Kinistino CiB, their close relationship with the town takes a lot of the workload off their backs.

“We have a few projects that we work on as a CiB as a whole, but for the most part, it’s the town that does a lot of the other work, like the maintenance,” Bragg said. “This year we’re taking on little projects to tidy up things that have been neglected.”

A new bridge for the town’s walking path and tidying up a treed area have been neglect projects that will be ready for the judges’ arrival.

Along with a new park thanks to a donation from the Mather family, Kinistino seems ready to be graded on categories such as environmental action, floral displays, heritage conservation, landscape urban forestry, and tidiness.

However, one important aspect the judge’s love is community interaction, and Kinistino CiB has an occasion planned for them to meet the town’s residents.

“We have a big barbecue in Mathers Park on [July 19] at lunch time,” Bragg said. “The whole community can come and visit with the judges; they always love to visit with the town people.”

The Class of Champions CiB judges will be in Kinistino from July 18 to 20. Results from the competition will be announced in late September.
