Ministry to take over next step of Sask Drive repaving in Melfort

The repaving of Saskatchewan Drive in Melfort has continued to roll along.

ASL Paving is nearly done their work on the road according to City Manager Ryan Danberg.

“And that’s putting in all the barrier curbs, as well as the sidewalks,” he said. “The contractor will now be doing its last little piece of landscaping and everything should be wrapped up mid-week next week.”

The sidewalks and curbs are just one step in a much larger project that the City of Melfort is doing through the Urban Highway Connector Program. Next, the city will meet with the Ministry of Highways, and the paving of Saskatchewan Drive will essentially be turned over to them.

“We’re really waiting now on the ministry to come in and we’re going to see our resurface project kick up by, I would think, early August at this point,” Danberg told northeastNOW.

After the paving, the city will then get the reins to the project back to be able to add permanent markings on the road.

As for the work that has already been completed, Danberg said they are very happy with how things have gone so far.

“Kudos to the contractor,” he said. “They continue to battle, obviously with the moisture that we’ve been experiencing over the last while, and they’ve went out of their way to deliver the project on time.”

As of right now, Danberg said the project is on time, and on budget as they haven’t really had any change orders yet.

The project comes with a $3 million ticket with $1.3 million coming from the City of Melfort.

Saskatchewan Drive is being repaved from Anderson Street on the west end, to the train tracks by the Canalta Hotel on the east side.
