‘Bring a lawn chair and your Spitz’: Northeast Expos to host baseball provincials

The 18U AA Tier 3 Provincial Baseball Championships will be in Melfort and Tisdale between July 26 and 30.

Sprunce Haven Ball Diamonds in Melfort and the Fairgrounds Ball Diamonds in Tisdale will see the Northeast Expos host seven other teams from around the province to battle for a provincial title.

“You can watch some fantastic ball in two different communities on the same weekend,” Committee Chair Michelle Mennie said.

She added having the tournament locally gives the players a chance to be able to stay at home, and play in front of the home crowd.

“These are some very talented kids in the area that just love to play baseball,” Mennie told northeastNOW. “They’re going to give it all they can and hopefully have a provincial title.”

Players on the Expos are from Melfort, Tisdale, Star City, Zenon Park, Hudson Bay, and Kelvington, really making it a ‘northeast’ team.

Mennie said with hosting tournaments comes a lot of work to make sure they go off without a hitch.

“Always looking for volunteers,” she said. “Our concession still needs some helpers, and ground workers and stuff like that, but it always seems that somebody steps up to help, there is usually never an issue.”

The semi-finals and gold medal game will take place in Tisdale on Sunday afternoon.

There will be concessions at both locations, and Mennie said admission to the games will be free.

“It’s bring a lawn chair, and bring your Spitz,” she said. “And you’re good to go.”
