Melfort Communities in Bloom (CiB) has been hard at work in beautifying the city and applying for grants.

Working hard at the latter paid off on Thusday, July 25.

Prairie North Co-op presented a cheque worth $35,000 to Melfort CiB on behalf of the Co-op Community Spaces program that helps create places for people to meet, play, learn, and share. The funding is going into expanding the community garden at Spruce Haven Park.

Jim Zemluk, secretary of the Prairie North Co-op board of directors, said it feels going knowing the Community Spaces funding went into their community.

“[The community garden] obviously was a need, and this need is being met,” Zemluk said. “Things are progressing in a positive nature. It’s a beautiful thing building local communities. They understand the needs and we want to thank the CiB for applying and getting the grant, because it does serve for the local people here.”

Melfort CiB Committee Member Shannon Marshall told northeastNOW she and Committee Chair Myra Busby nearly fell over once they learned about the funding.

“I called Myra right away saying the project is a go,” Marshall said. “We’re more than thrilled that we were accepted for it. We couldn’t have done it without it.”

The community garden currently has 30 garden beds planted, but Melfort CiB intends on putting in bench seating, picnic areas, storage, garbage cans, and potentially a gazebo. Marshall said all of the garden’s additions will be complete in 2020.

“In the winter we do a lot of our meetings and come up with our latest ideas for the next season,” she said. “When the snow melts, we tackle.”
