‘Couldn’t be more proud of them’: Muenster 13U Red Sox win provincial title

The Muenster Red Sox minor baseball program continues to bring home provincial titles.

During the weekend of July 19 to 21, two Muenster teams won gold at their respective provincial levels. Then, over the weekend of July 26 to 28, the 13U AA Red Sox won the Tier 1 title in Unity.

“We couldn’t be more proud of them, they played so well,” Head Coach Marty Yeager said. “So, it was really a good weekend for us.”

Things opened for the Red Sox on Friday with a huge 12-2 win over the Saskatoon Brave Cyclones. That was then followed by a 15-1 drubbing of the Moose Jaw Canucks on Saturday morning. But then, Muenster ran into the Macklin Lakers to close out pool play which ended up in a 14-2 loss. Nevertheless, the Red Sox grabbed a spot in the semifinals on Sunday against the Estevan Brewers, a game they won 11-1. That win set up another meeting with the Macklin Lakers. This matchup was different as the Red Sox dominated, winning 21-2.

“We knew what they were all about,” he said. “And I don’t think during pool play we showed them our best. Which maybe came around to help us a bit.”

Yeager said on Sunday, the stars kind of aligned as they had their best pitchers available, and on fire as the Red Sox pitchers fired complete games in both the semi and the final. He said it was a progressive climb up the mountain for the team this season.

“This was one of the best weekends that our boys played collectively as a group,” Yeager told northeastNOW. “There wasn’t just one standout. We had boys that had glimpses of greatness I guess if you want to say it. But truly we were solid from top to bottom, so it’s really easy for me and Devon as coaches to just watch this all happen. I get to sit on the bench and basically tell them who’s going where, and then when everything goes according to plan, you really start to look like you know what you’re doing. But I can’t take a whole lot of credit when the boys play as well as they do, I didn’t have to do a whole lot.”

Yeager added coming from a baseball crazy town like Muenster, there isn’t a ‘pressure’ or ‘expectation’ to win at this level, they just want to make it to Sunday, and play their best.

Next up for the Red Sox 13U AA team is the Western Championships in Strathmore, Alberta in August. However, it won’t really be the last baseball that group plays together. Of the 12 players on the team, 11 of them will graduate to 15U next season, sticking together for the most part.
