‘Food is food’: Tisdale Food Bank continues to serve during summer months

Aug 1, 2019 | 5:02 PM

While food banks get lots of attention in the winter months, especially around Christmas, people still need to eat during the summer.

In Tisdale, the Salvation Army Food Bank continues to hand out food at this time of year.

“They come in, or phone weekly to see what we have available down here,” Amanda Miller, a store clerk at the Salvation Army said. “We’re open on Monday’s from 1 to 4 p.m., so that’s usually when we get them in, but we also do emergency hampers as well.”

As of right now, needs at the food bank are liquids whether it be water, or juice to stay hydrated. Canned goods are also on the list.

“Anything that is quick and easy to use in the kitchen, for adults and children,” Miller told northeastNOW. “Snacks if possible, and it doesn’t matter if it’s healthy or not; food is food.”

When it comes to donations, Miller said there is still great support at this time of year with food and monetary donations coming in. She said they also receive a lot of help from the local Co-op that has a food donation bin in the store which is then brought to the Salvation Army Food Bank on a weekly basis.

“It is amazing to have such a wonderful community that everybody can get together and make sure that nobody is left out,” Miller said.

She called the community ‘very generous’, and thanked everyone for helping.

The Tisdale Salvation Army Food Bank serves as far North as Carrot River, South to around Porcupine, in between Melfort to the West, and surrounding farms.
