Main intersection closed in Nipawin while water treatment plant work reaches completion

A main intersection in Nipawin will experience a closure for a few days as the final stage of the new water treatment plant work is underway.

Starting on Wednesday, the intersection of Sixth Street East and Maple Road will be closed. Town crews will be conducting work to accommodate underground infrastructure tie-ins.

Director of Works and Utilities Blaine Crowley said this is an important stage of the plant project.

“We are tieing into those underground lines as another access to distribution for the town so we will end up with three distribution points now with the new plant,” Crowley said.

The new plant has been operational since February but this line work will incorporate lines from the previous plant.

“We are installing a valve at one specific intersection there so when they do that main tie-in it won’t impact people by a water outage,” Crowley said.

The work is expected to only last for a few days but Crowley said the intersection closure could be of concern for motorists.

“That’s a pretty big intersection there because it carries a lot of traffic back and forth by L.P. Miller High School,” Crowley said. “We are trying to get this finished before school is back in because that creates another huge traffic issue.”

There will be signage and detours in place to allow traffic to more easily access the hospital.

The work being done will put a cap on the multi-million dollar project that has been underway for a number of years.
