Below average lows in Melfort and Nipawin, record lows in Last Mountain Lake

The first day of fall isn’t for another month, but it felt like it came early over the weekend of Aug. 17 and 18, and into the morning of Aug. 19.

Last Mountain Lake was one of the coldest spots in the province, dropping to 1.3 degrees Celsius on Monday morning. It was the second record setting low temperature day in a row.

As for other areas in the northeast, Melfort got to about 4.4 C, and Nipawin only got to about 7 C, both of those are below average, but not quite record lows.

“We had a low pressure system go through the northern part of the Prairies,” Natalie Hasel with Environment Canada said. “With the passage of that low pressure system, a cold front, or the advancing cold air mass went through.”

The cool weather should pass by Tuesday at the latest according to Hasel. Temperatures are expected to get back to somewhat summer temperatures in the low 20’s. The average for this time of year is usually around 22 C. The night time temperatures are also expected to improve as the week progresses.

While some may just need to add a jacket for their morning commute, the cold weather causes some bigger concerns for farmers with frost becoming a possibility, which could wreak havoc as crops are still being tended to.

“You don’t want to lose your crop to something like frost,” Hasel told northeastNOW. “Because it can be quite widespread. So that would be the main concern there.”

She added some lower lying areas could be even colder than what was reported. Those areas could be more prone to frost because cold air pools.

While there is still some summer weather on the way, fall is coming quickly and Hasel said it could be a good time to get ready for the next season.
