‘It was a long road’: Michaud commits to UBC for post-secondary hockey

Another graduating Mustang has chosen a post-secondary institution to continue his hockey career.

Forward Dryden Michaud has committed to the University of British Columbia (UBC) for the 2019/2020 hockey season.

“I know a few people who’ve gone through the program at UBC with the men’s hockey team,” Michaud told northeastNOW. “I’ve heard nothing but good things come from them and I think it was a good fit all-around.”

The B.C. native signed with Melfort in September and immediately made an impact, scoring goals in his first three games as a Mustang. He played a total of 16 regular season games with Melfort, notching three points. He battled injuries through the early part of the 2019 calendar year, but came back to play in a pair of playoff games as part of the Mustangs run to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Finals.

Previously, Michaud spent time in the B.C. Junior B ranks before getting a shot with the Saskatoon Blades. He then spent a few games with the Surrey Eagles in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) before coming to Melfort.

“It was a long road,” Michaud said. “Playing different places, but I’m really excited to start school and keep playing hockey at the highest level possible.”

As for his time in Melfort, Michaud said the run through the playoffs was probably his favorite moment as he said he hadn’t been very far into the post-season before. He said his time with the Mustangs was also great off the ice.

“Melfort was awesome,” Michaud said. “We had a great hockey team. Being one of the older guys, it was good to help some of the younger guys coming in and let them know what goes on. Melfort really shaped me into a better person and I’m really happy about that.”

Michaud added it’s definitely going to be a change going from junior to university hockey, but he said he’s ready.

“Just the whole change of the schedule,” he said. “You’ve got to maintain your schooling and maintain your hockey at the same time. I’m very excited for it, but it will definitely be a big change.”

He said he will be taking general studies for his first year at UBC.

Michaud is the sixth Mustang graduate from the 2018/2019 team to commit to post-secondary hockey.
