Area gardeners contributing to Melfort Food Bank

Aug 27, 2019 | 12:41 PM

The Melfort Food Bank is seeing a boost in donations thanks to area gardeners, but more help is needed as the fall and winter seasons approach.

Volunteer Cecilia Berrgren told northeastNOW there has been a bit of a slow down in donations to the food bank so the produce is a very welcome sight.

According to Berrgren, there is actually no season busier than another.

“We are busy all times of year. We don’t have any special day or week or month that we are looking at an uptick,” she said.

The food bank could use other donations to go along with the garden vegetables.

“We’ll be needing canned meat and fish, canned fruits and vegetables, flour, oatmeal, rice and so on,” Berrgren said. “We also need monetary donations because like everyone else we have bills.”

With back to school on the horizon, donations of the canned meat and fish will be needed for lunches.

A donation of fish was made by local conservation officers which Berrgren said has been another saving grace when it comes to summer time donations.

As for the garden produce thus far, Berrgren said gardeners have supplied the bank with earlier vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers. Later on in the harvest will be the potatoes, carrots and turnips.

“There is a rumour that we will not accept produce unless it is washed – not true,” Berggren said. “Any good gardener knows that once you start to wash vegetables you disturb the skin and they do not keep as well.”

Berrgren said they just ask that any excess dirt and mud be removed but to not wash the produce ahead of bringing it in.

Donations can be made by calling Berrgren at 752-5506.
