‘Great community support’: Nipawin to host northeast JDRF walk

Community members in the northeast will walk to raise funds and awareness for diabetes on the last Sunday in September.

The Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) walk is being held in Nipawin for the second year in a row.

Historically, the walk was held in Tisdale according to Randy Durovick, the fundraising coordinator with the program.

“In 2018, there was great support from Nipawin so we decided to offer the walk there,” Durovick said.

A group of volunteers came together to host the walk last year and will do so again this year after seeing the increase in numbers for the Nipawin walk.

“Not only the new families that were able to come out but the community support,” Durovick said. “The Nipawin Hawks junior hockey team with Doug Johnson – the head coach who was so kind to bring out the hockey team and they are scheduled to join us again this year.”

In Saskatchewan, there are over 300,000 people impacted by diabetes making the JDRF walk an important tradition to keep alive.

“All of the funds raised go to research here in Saskatchewan and that’s to find the cause and cure for Type 1 diabetes,” Durovick said.

Registrations are being accepted online which will give participants access to the fundraising tool as well.

“It’s quite easy to do and still lots of time left to get involved,” Durovick said.

The JDRF walk will leave from Nipawin town square following registration, opening ceremonies, and a ribbon cutting that all begins at 11 a.m. on Sept. 29.

There will also be a post-walk barbecue with entertainment and live music.
