Volunteers needed for tree plant day at Spruce Haven Recreation Area

A call for volunteers is being made by George Home Hardware ahead of tree plant day in Melfort.

The Tree Canada initiative to make communities more green will see 135 trees and shrubs planted in the Spruce Haven Recreation area on Sept. 18 from 1-4 p.m.

Manager of George Home Hardware Jeff Klan told northeastNOW the application to Tree Canada was successful and now they need some volunteers to come help out with the actual planting.

“We just need to back fill them and put a stick next to them so that it stands up nice and straight for the whole winter,” Klan said.

The city will have all of the holes drilled and all the trees will be set right next to each hole.

“There’s not too much work that needs to be done, it’s just that there are a lot of trees to do,” Klan said.

Communities in Bloom members will be on hand to help out along with crews from the city. Any groups or individuals that are wanting to help out can just meet at the Spruce Haven Recreation Area that day just before 1 p.m.

The trees and shrubs are being planted east of the skate park, throughout the parking lot in the boulevards and on the north side of the soccer pitches.

Around 80 trees and shrubs are being donated by Tree Canada and the City of Melfort is matching the grant.

“Its an up and coming part of town and it’s an area that just needs more trees and more green,” Klan said.

Melfort along with 30 other Home Hardware locations were awarded grants this year.

National Tree Plant day is on Sept. 24.
