Dogstable Abbey: From rescue dog to RCMP comfort dog

The Carrot River RCMP’s latest recruit might not meet most operational requirements, but her best talent is cheering up the town.

Abbey, who has been living with Const. James Crew of the Carrot River detachment for nearly four years, was originally a rescue dog that came from a puppy mill in Ontario.

Crew said Abbey was well underweight when he received her, but after many years of kindness and nourishment, she’s ready to give all the love back to anyone she visits.

“She was really skittish but she’s doing really well now,” Crew said. “I just brought her to work and she brightens everything up. She loves everything: birds, cats, dogs, people. It doesn’t matter; she’s so gentle.”

Abbey won’t be a tracking dog for the Carrot River RCMP. Her duties are to be herself and brighten the days of the officers and visitors at the detachment, responsibilities Crew said are crucial for his fellow Mounties, especially after traumatizing events.

“She’s got one of those demeanors where everyone is going to smile and she’ll sense if anything is wrong,” he said.

Crew admitted he was taken by surprise at the amount of love shown toward Abbey on social media. The Saskatchewan RCMP’s post on her reached nearly 4,000 likes and 2,000 shares, although he said grabbing the spotlight is “kind of what she does.”

Abbey is considered “1,000 per cent approachable” for the public, Crew said.
