Humboldt Good Neighbour Store celebrates 27 years

Sep 18, 2019 | 5:11 PM

The Humboldt Good Neighbour Store kicked off its 27th anniversary.

Susan Braun, coordinator for the Humboldt Good Neighbour Store, said there was a line of eager shoppers waiting for doors to open on the first morning of its four-day anniversary celebration.

“I think we’re all really proud of what the store has accomplished in the last 27 years,” Braun said. “We recycle in a lot of ways. People bring in their stuff, we sell it, and the money goes back in the community.

“It’s good for people who want to donate, for people who want to buy at a low price, and it’s good for the community as well.”

The Humboldt Good Neighbour Store receives donated items from residents who no longer have a use for it, and then they get sorted, cleaned, and priced by volunteers before they leave the doors.

Since its inception in 1992, the Humboldt Good Neighbour Store has brought in over $3 million that is donated to organizations in the Humboldt area, including Humboldt General Hospital, care homes, Special Olympics, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In 2018, the Humboldt Good Neighbour store raised nearly $320,000 and disbursed it to 39 organizations. Braun is expecting another substantial amount of money will be given out to groups in December.

“If anybody wants to apply for funds we do have application forms available at the store,” she said. “They can fill out the form and give it by the end of October, and then the board will decide.”

The Humboldt Good Neighbour Store’s anniversary week will last until Saturday, Sept. 21.
